Overall, he has been doing better…although we are still struggling with his schedule not to mention his formula. I started to wean him off in the last week and today was actually one of his last breast feedings. I’m very disappointed about this but in order to figure what is wrong with him I needed to eliminate all these variables. Not to metion the time it was taking away from Chloe to breast feed AND give him formula.

I explained to the Dr. what reactions he has been having and explained to him that we switched from Similac Advanced ready made to powder Advanced to Alimentum Ready Made and that some of symptoms seemed to get a little better ( his rash, fussyness) but that he was still very gassy and his poops were still pretty thick and only happening every other day or so.

He suggested that we try a formula that has 100% hydrolised protien called Elecare. He thinks he may have an allergic reaction to the protien. The Alimentum is 90% hydrolised protien but if he really has an allergy to protien this 10% can make a huge difference. I asked him about Isomil and he said that in over 50% of cases most babies were also allergic to the soy protien but that I could try to appease my mind. So that day we swicthed him over to Isomil. Ofcourse, it was hard to judge his reaction to the formula since any change could also be related to the shots or even to the fact that he is coming down with a cold and has been having trouble breathing ( Chloe has had a cold now for two days so he probably got it from her). Today however went rather well and he seems less colicy over all, but his rash has not disappeared yet. If anything it has been getting worse again.

His schedule is really up in the air. He has been feeding 6 times most days having 4-5 oz bottles ( sometimes only 3 oz) per feeding. Closer to 4 oz most days. How the day goes usually depends on what time he wakes up at night for his feeding. The closer to 5 he wakes up at, the more normal our day is. If he feeds at 5am, he then wakes up around 8am, I feed him around 8:30-9am and then again around 12:30pm, 3:30pm, 7:30pm, 11pm. BUT on some days, he wakes up earlier like 4am and I end up feeding him earlier like 7:30am and then everything gets thrown off. some days he eats every 3 hours for some feedings too. Today he ate at 4am, 7:30am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm…then he finaly slept for about 3 hours and he did not wake up until 9:30pm. We fed him then and he stayed awake for about 1 1/2 and started to get fussy, we tried to feed him more around 11pm but he would not drink. so we put him down and he has been sleeping now for over an hour. So it is going well for a change. I guess we’ll see what time he wakes up at tonight.

Otherwise, he is started to smile and be awake for longer times. Chloe adores him and is always asking about him, helping us out with him. She loves to rub his head and suck her fingers. They are very cute together.

Charles and I share night time feedings otherwise i’d go crazy!

Well it’s 12:00pm, best go to bed!

Week 6 update

Alex is now 6 weeks. He is getting bigger every day it seems and is much more aware of his surroundings. He is holding his head quite well and pushing with his little feet. He has gotten too big for his bassinette and is now sleeping at night in his crib which charles’ sister brought up this past weekend. He takes most of his naps downstairs either in the pack and play or in one of his bouncy chairs. Sometimes if he is really fussy he will sleep in his infant carrier which seems to work best so far!

He has been very gasy this past week. It seems he is reacting to the increased amount of Formula we have been giving him. He is not pooping as much and is crying after each bottle non stop. We started giving him mylocon, we changed to powder formula ( after we discovered they put MSG in the ready formula and we thought it might affect him) and we changed to a Dr. Brown bottle. This all seems to have helped he seems to have gotten better in the last two days. He also has gotten bad rash/acne on his face and now shoulders and parts of his arm. We are not sure what this is from. Some say it’s due to an allergic reaction to the formula. We will see what the Dr says when we see him in two weeks.

Early this week he actually slept through what I call ” the night” he went from 9:30-10pm to 4am one night and to 5am next night. So he went without a bottle for over 6 hours. However, he did not fall asleep right away on both nights. instead he would cry for a while on and off until about midnight, 1am. So in both cases he did not sleep more than 4 hours straight.

After these two nights, he went back to his usual pattern of eating at 9:30pm and then falling asleep around 11:00pm and waking up at 2am…which is tough on us. he then wakes again around 6am. but he has a difficult time falling asleep after his 2am bottle.(atleast, when I give him this feeding). Last night I was able to get back to bed at 3:30am.

After his 6am feeding he snoozes for about an hour or so and then eats again around 9:30 am. then around 1pm, 5pm, 9pm. We sometimes try to squeeze in an extra feeding by feeding him around 4pm, then 7pm and then 10:30pm in the hopes that he will wake up later than 2am. This never seems to work, but for some reason we keep trying.

We have been going on playdates with some new friends we met at the park Jackie and her two sons Daniel (2 1/2) and William (4mths) and kathy and her two daughters Sarah(3) and Julia (19mths). It’s been nice to get out of the house. Unfortunately Alex always seems to sleep through them.

He sleeps pretty much from 10am to 1pm consistantly. The other naps are not as consistant. He sleep again for another hour or so after his second bottle and again in the evening after his dinner bottle.

We are slowly adjusting to life with two babies. It’s tough but we are getting the hang of it slowly but surely. We are hoping to start eating better and excersing more as soon as we get our double jogger which should be coming in soon. I think I’ll feel better once I lose those extra 22 pounds. My goal is to be 132 lbs again…if not lower!

Well that is all for now!

I love you Alex, you are definitly a cutie!
